They are portraits for me when I click them. Desktop + Browser. My instance uses the Frio theme + some custom CSS on top that should not affect how these photos are displayed. idk if that's the sort of input you were looking for.

In this specific case, I would like to check when and what was changed in the Images::getScalingDimensions($width, $height, 90); method to confirm / rule out being the cause of this bug.

Does anybody know about the "state of the art" regarding the image galleries? There are at least to broken behaviors.
1. There is a like button, but it has no effect (it does not toggle) 2. There is a comment option under the image (which indicated it is handled as a kind of thread, too) but if I tag someone things break.

I created a semi public friendica instance (kassel.social) and currently I do not want to allow registrations from general worldwide public but from people in my region. For this, I set the registration policy to "by approval". The problem now is, that I do not get notified by E-Mail if someone wants to register. I need to manually check the instance's front end to see that there is a new registration. Is this by intention, do I do something wrong? Otherwise, I would like to create a new issue on git regarding this.
Does anybody know where the E-Mail templates are stored and generated? I like to adjust an issue (for at least the German translation) that in the email subject it is written "X commented your post" even in the body it then tells me "X liked your post". :)

Du kommentierst hier schon Beiträge von friendica. Friendica und Mastodon "federieren" sehr gut miteinander. Kleine Ausnahme ist zum Beispiel das friendica (noch!) nicht die Teilnahme an Umfragen von Mastodon unterstützt. Dafür kann es aber an einigen Ecken wesentlich mehr als Mastodon. Formatierung von Beiträgen, einbetten von Bildern etc.
Dazu ein kleiner Tipp: Wenn Du unten rechts in einem Beitrag auf die drei Punkte klickst, kannst Du mit "Ursprüngliche Seite öffnen" sehen, wo und wie der Beitrag ursprünglich erstellt wurde. Das lohnt sich immer mal wieder, da auch Mastodon nicht immer alle Inhalte der Originalbeitrags 1:1 übernimmt. Zum Beispiel limitiert Mastodon die Anzahl der Bilder in einem Beitrag auf vier, auch wenn im Originalbeitrag mehr Bilder eingefügt wurden.

I am not sure what you mean by "grabbed from /photos/one/image/ID". I checked a few posts with images and their source uris, they all are from various locations depending on the origin of the post. For Friendica post the uris of the images are most frequent in the fromat: "instace url"/photo/"32 chars hash"-0.jpg

Thank you for clarification. I affirm that fancy box is not triggered there, but image neither displayed directly. On my instance, clicking on an image creates some kind of gallery, allowing me to browse through the images:

Well have a look at the image gallery on my friendica (https://friends.brockha.us/photos/grischa). You'll notice, that my images are loaded in fancybox there already. 😉 As there is no hook it is not possible to do that from an addon. I use a patched frio theme for that. :)

Ich fand es im Gegenteil sogar praktisch, um die direkte URL des angeklickten Bildes zu bekommen oder es mir (wieder) irgendwo abzuspeichern. Aber das ist ja nur meine "Vorliebe". Über den aktuellen Stand, bei dem Du schon so durch die Bilder klicken kannst, noch Fancybox darüberzulegen bei einem Klick auf das gerade angezeigte Bild halte ich für unangemessene "Doppelfunktion". Ob es technisch aber möglich wäre Dir dies als Option des Fancybox Add-Ons zu ermöglichen müsstest Du @Grischa fragen. :)
Ganz im Allgemeinen finde ich, dass wir noch einiges an Verbesserungen im Umgang mit Medien auf Friendica in Zukunft einführen können.

To be honest I got very quickly used to read the descriptions by myself since I often find it interesting how people describe their content and in some rare cases it helped me to understand what I "see" on the image in the first place.

Most of you might tell: "Yeah, if one prefers media centric Fediverse, then check out #pixelfed ". But I think, pixelfed is yet too much of an Instagram clone, only providing the image / video focus (which bothered me at Instagram from the very beginning not being able to have good commenting / discussion options there).
In my view, Friendica has great potential becoming a great "one fits all" application for the majority of people who like social media and the concept of the Fediverse. It has way more cool functions than #mastodon / pixelfed (which are in my opinion too close copies of Instagram and Twitter, respectively) but much simpler and convenient than Hubzilla (which I think is really great, for a computer science person, but not for the broad non-technical focussed public)
Wrapping it up: I would love to see a Friendica development towards an easier multimedia support. What are your thoughts?
@Marek Bachmann :friendica: I think the question is misguided. Friendica isn’t a coherent entity. It’s developers, present and past (quite a few opinionated choices we’ve had to grapple with), server admins and users.
So ultimately Friendica ends up being what the people working on it want to spend their time on, regardless of any coherent central vision.
So far no developer has had any strong inclination working on image/video, but you can single-handedly change this, and you’ve already started with the wonderful image grid you came up with.
HI @Hypolite Petovan thank you for your precious answer. I can clearly see that my question seems "misguided" in terms of an open source project, which is perfectly fine since it was by intention:
I wanted to hear from you people who are just more experienced in the Fediverse world what YOU think about Fediverse in general and Friendica specifically.
And I think this valuable, not least because there is always the chance that someone's vision does not fit at all to the vision of the majority of other participants on such a project.

Threaded conversations à-la-Facebook.
RSS support.
Diaspora support (I mainly like the concept, I don't have many remaining Diaspora contacts).
Twitter support (although my patience for the platform is rapidly dwindling).
It's written in PHP so I can contribute!
I've looked in Hubzilla as well but I found it too unintuitive and I don't care much about nomad identity anyway.
I also run a single-user Pixelfed instance that I though would be a good complement for images, but I found out that I use it the same way I used Instagram before Facebook bought it out, which excludes casual image posts.
Still, I'm not a big image guy, I'm even less of a video guy, so I've never felt compelled to look into media support in Friendica myself. I've even resorted to post pictures on my Twitter account which would be mirrored on Friendica.

I am not that much in media myself, what is driving me is that I would love to motivate many of my real life contacts to leave commercial platforms for the very reasons we are all know too well.
And I started talking to them already. What I learned so far is, as I elaborated above, they use Instagram / TikTok and so on to "show" their lives but to their own "handpicked" groups.
For me, it is desirable to offer such people a place in the Fediverse. Where they are not subject to advertising and data exploitation.
So I am looking at the Fediverse and its applications at the moment, asking my self: "What might be required that the Fediverse, in terms of an alternative to commercial social media, will be a welcoming and attractive place for all the good people outside, especially when they do not care about the technology itself too much?"
@Marek Bachmann :friendica: I'm envious of driven people like you. I, on the other hand, don't hope to convert anyone, so most tasks I've been working on have been revolving around my own usage. My own usage of the software, and my own usage of the codebase, for which I've proposed several structure changes, most of them are still ongoing a few years in.
I do enjoy the fact that these tasks have also been beneficial for other people, but this is not my main focus. Although you can get me to do stuff outside of my comfort zone if you bug me enough on Signal, just ask @Kristof Körner .
Finally, I have a soft spot for assisting other developers, as you've probably noticed. Even when I'm not particularly active, I will make sure that motivated people are getting timely answers and reviews and feedback because motivation and goodwill are precious resources not to be squandered.

I am really impressed that you support #Friendica this much already. I have to admit that I thought you would focus on #mastodon primarily / solely, like many others.
I have a couple of test user accounts for developing, and it is a little bit cumbersome that I can't delete a test account directly but have to wait (a week or so) until it is finally deleted.
@Raroun @Marek Bachmann :friendica: I don't know if that has unwanted side effects, such as warnings or even errors. I would wait for normal deletion and then purge them continue with testing like test12345 and so.
I had an issue with the „move account“ feature in Friendica that doesn’t work. In my case it created users that didn’t even showed up in the user overview. Deleting them solved my issue. Anyway ist probably more safe to wait a week.
Attached: There was no text after the [img] tag and as a result the image was extracted from the body and added to a separate data structure called "attachments".
Both images in your posts are attached, you can see this because they are displayed in your wonderfully crafted image grid.
Then, summing it up: I just definitely do NOT have the issue that clicking only work in a specific column. But I think I should stop right now complaining about NOT having a problem for my karma.

@Grischa @Marek Bachmann :friendica: No, it just piggybacks off of it. I didn't realize the bdy-attach feature was recent, but then again, I'm always on the edge, so nothing feels recent if it's more than a week old or so.
@Marek Bachmann :friendica: You can see the issue in my code snippet, the first image link has the fancybox class, but the second image link doesn't, which fails to bring up the gallery when clicking on it.
Is it a general behavior that when I interact with a post, e.g. to like a reply, the site scrolls up to the root of the thread? This is very annoying when I want to read through replies and comment / like on my way through. It requires a lot of scrolling through the same content over and over again.
Is this an issue with the code, or does it depend on the used browser?
@Marek Bachmann :friendica: This usually has to do with the automatic collapse of the post content. When a like or a comment is submitted, the whole thread is asynchronously regenerated, and if the dimensions of the new threads aren't the same as the existing thread, browsers adjust the scrolling according to factors unknown to me.

What attachment detection do you mean exactly? Before fancybox the attachments were simply .. uhm .. attached. No special detection or preparation. If you search for "body-attach" you'll find the code actually attaching images. But there is no "magic".

Yeah, you saw it by my embedded examples your self. What bothers me most is:
It just looks messy (especially when there is a mix of landscape and portrait format)
Besides the aesthetics, multiple images take a lot of room (when you do not use an add-on like show more)
My suggestion on which I would love to hear your opinion is to use a grid format like on #mastodon:
I would pitch a suggestion by adding a PR for a (from my point of view) "better" appearance based to this tutorial. I do not like to use JS in general and would leave it out by determine the suited amount of columns in the backend.

@grischa Well for my addon I did not had the necessity to find that place. I gets the content of a post via a hook.
For a theme I am not sure atm. I am poking myself. It depends. There seem to be different templates for different types of posts. wall_thread.tpl seems to be one.
It is more that I look into the developer console of my browser and try to find matching code in order to identify the template.
Dear @grischa I look in your add-on to copy a good practice for using the hook approach to manipulate the representation of attached images which is quite helpful for me. As I played around with fancybox I encountered the little issue that the gallery only includes the attached images prior and including the one you clicked on. @Marek Bachmann Standard Mastodon crops the images (in the grid, but even if there is one) and I wouldn't like that; that should at least be configurable. But I do agree that the Mastodon, Pleroma, Twitter, Tumblr way of showing multiple images looks better than Friendica.
You can achieve a better look when you post multiple images by putting an empty line between the tags of the photos. The preview will help getting a better look.
If implementing a Mastodon like thing, especially if some form of cropping could occur, can I then also note that Mastodon's 'focal point' feature is really useful. It prevents photos from being cropped in embarrassing ways.
What is also important for me to do better / in another way than mastodon: I do not like to have a limit of four images in the grid without any notification that more images are attached, like currently on mastodon.
I can see the value of this and generally like it. However, given that Friendica lends itself to larger posts than Mastodon, including posts that might use multiple images interspersed within the body of the text, I am wary of any solution that compiles all the images in a post and displays them as "attachments" at the end.
There are times when I want to use images in the middle of a post, and they'd become much less meaningful in a compiled cluster at the end of the post, even if they were in a much prettier grid.
A solution could be to distinguish between "inline" images and attached. BTW: Speaking of inserting images in a post at a certain position, I wanted to complain that this currently does not respect the cursor position, so that whenever I insert an image using the little image icon the bbcode apears at the very end of the input filed.
@Spencer @Marek Bachmann :friendica: Friendica detects images at the end and groups them in "attachments" as Mastodon does. However, we don't touch images interspersed between paragraphs.
Marek's feature could handle the attachment pictures without touching the post illustrations.

Am I right that there is no attachment feature for the creators of post, or is it? I never saw such an option yet. My current assumption is that the term "attachment" refers solely to an implicit definition like "the media at the end of a post can be / is considered as attachments"

In any way, regarding the outlaying of multiple images issue and my current work on it, I can at least assure that images are included with the <img src="{{$image.preview}}" alt="{{$image.attachment.description}}" title="{{$image.attachment.description}}". So including the description is considered at his point. The description for images from Mastodon are definitely obeyed on friendica. On Friendica you post you can use bbcode to add a description in this way:

Sorry, da habe ich mich unklar ausgedrückt. Mein Account hier ist ja auch Friendica und deshalb kann ich es nicht aus Sicht von Mastodon prüfen. Die, die es prüfen könnten müssen also bei Mastodon sein UND dir folgen.
Tatsächlich beobachte ich auch gerade einige Probleme beim Teilen von Bildern, insbesondere außerhalb von Friendica also zum Beispiel bei Mastodon. Ich werde das mal bei Gelegenheit präziseren, was genau wo nicht geht und verlinke dich dann in einer neuen Meldung. Dieser Thread ist ja eigentlich für das Image Grid gedacht.
Oh, ich sehe gerade deine Instanz läuft schon auf 2022.12-rc, je nachdem wann libranet.de sich den aktuellen Stand von Git holt, sollte es bald bei dir verfügbar sein.
Wie gesagt, genau darum geht es hier Das Image Grid wurde erst gestern in 2022.12-rc gemerged. Es kann sehr gut sein das dein Instanz-Admin @Steffen K9 🐰 die neuen Commits hoch nicht geholt hat.
Ich sehe aber gerade auch, dass die Bilder im eingebetten Link scheinbar tatsächlich nicht im Image Grid erscheinen. Kannst du mal auf den Link
@Marek Bachmann :friendica: @Grischa Don't worry about it, it's an issue with the fancybox addon specifically, and you need an image grid with two columns, it doesn't affect inline images like you've shared.
Currently, I am reworking the upload size limits description and usage for images on the Admin site. I encountered IMHO an inconsistency in the semantic of providing '0' and '-1' as a limit value:
For the maximum size 0 means unlimited, but this is yet not interpreted that way in the code (there it is only compared if the image size is grater than the limit, which in case of 0 just rejects any file)
For the maximum length -1 mean unlimited
Question: Which values should we use, and how should they be interpreted in the code base? For me, it would make sens to use "-1" in general for no limit and "0" for deactivated. But what would "0" then mean in the case of "image length"?
On the admin site for image upload limits it is stated that "setting 0 bytes for maxfilesize equals no limit", but I found that the case $maximagesize = 0 is not handled as INFINITY but a...
@Marek Bachmann :friendica: I believe so in this case, but your suggestion of an additional "Upload disabled" feature is interesting even if I'm not personally favorable to it.
I am not prioritizing nor advertising such a feature, neither. This option, only came to my awareness while digging through the code. I think this option won't do any harm either, since there might be situations where admins might favor to do not allow image upload, e.g. for legal reasons. My focus is more on consistency regarding the meaning of the numbers for the limits.

Hello @Friendica Support after pulling from dev at 27th November, I receive this message on the admin page, complaining about the system has no access to .well-known/host-meta which indicates a severe misconfiguration. What has changed?
@Marek Bachmann I guess you have to check what is written in your eror.log and also friendica.log (if you have it enabled). When I call https://friendica.mbbit.de/.well-known/host-meta I get an empty page which could mean that there is an error in a PHP script.

@Marek Bachmann :friendica: The base principle is an HTML elements can have only one id and it should be unique in a page, while they can have multiple classes separated by spaces in the class attribute and elements can share classes.
Form fields are mostly generated through the field_*.tpl templates.

I changed a smarty template but what ever I do these changes are not reflected on the frontend. I read that Friendica "precompiles" those templates, but I have no clue when and how this is being done?
Yeah, that was the problem, I only changed the template in templates/view. Thank you very much. But now I wonder: Since I assume that the frontend always uses on of the themes, where are the templates in templates/view actually used?
One more question: When I add change a template for a specific theme, shouldn't I also do it for the other themes? And if yes, how would I best check their appearance, especially for the default templates?

My understanding is that polls are currently only displayed but you can't vote on them yet. It would be great if this will be added to a future version of Friendica!
